How the SSCC pallet label template is built

Use this template for a logistic unit — a pallet or a shipping case — identified by an SSCC: an 18-digit serial shipping container code whose last digit is a mod-10 check digit. The label prints the SSCC as a GS1-128 barcode, the GTIN and batch of the contents as text, and the SSCC again in grouped, readable form under the barcode. The barcode is drawn by ^BC, with the module width set by ^BY.

^BY3 sets the module (narrow bar) width to 3 dots (range 1–10; about 0.375 mm at 203 dpi). In ^BCN,160,N,N,N,D the parameters are: orientation N; height 160 dots (range 1–32000); interpretation line off, because the template prints its own formatted SSCC line; no line above; no UCC check digit; and mode D, which produces GS1-128 with FNC1 so that (00) is read as an Application Identifier instead of text. The label is 4 × 3 in at 8 dpmm (203 dpi): 812 × 609 dots.

The SSCC in the template, 001234567890123452, passes the GS1 checks our linter runs: 18 digits and a correct check digit. Common mistakes

• Encoding the SSCC as plain Code 128 (mode N or A): the barcode has no FNC1, the scanner returns the digits as ordinary text and receiving systems that expect GS1 reject the label — lint rule ZPL4003.
• A wrong check digit in the SSCC: the barcode still scans, so the wrong number reaches the receiver's system. Recompute the last digit from the first 17 — lint rule ZPL4004.
• An SSCC with fewer or more than 18 digits after (00): the AI is fixed-length, so the scanner splits the data in the wrong place — lint rule ZPL4005.
• A readable line that does not match the encoded SSCC: the formatted line under the barcode is a separate ^FD field; update both together.
• Reusing ^BY3 on a 300 dpi printer: 3 dots are then about 0.25 mm instead of 0.375 mm and the barcode prints a third narrower — check the result with the barcode fit calculator.
