How to measure a label from ZPL

1. Paste your ZPL — from a spool file, an integration log, or whatever your application sends to the printer.
2. Press Analyze. The tool reads ^PW and ^LL; if they are missing it derives the extent from field coordinates (^FO/^FT) and says so.
3. Read the candidate table: the same dot count is 4×6 inches at 203 DPI but roughly 2.7×4 inches at 300 DPI — that mismatch is where most 'label prints too small' reports come from.
4. If exactly one candidate matches a standard label size, an estimated DPI is shown; otherwise the tool refuses to guess and tells you why.

When this is the right tool

Labels printing too small, too large or not filling a 4×6 sheet almost always trace back to a DPI mismatch: ZPL authored for 203 DPI prints at two-thirds size on a 300 DPI printer. Use this to find out which resolution a supplier template was written for, or to audit files before swapping printer models.

Frequently asked questions

• Why is there sometimes no estimate? — The same dot count can match a standard size at more than one resolution (1218×609 dots is 4×2 at 300 DPI and 2×1 at 600 DPI). In that case the tool gives no estimate and explains why — fabricated certainty would recreate the very problem this tool solves.
• Doesn't the ZPL itself say the DPI? — No. ^PW812 only says 812 dots; how many millimetres those dots span is a property of the printer, not the code. DPI lives in the device.
• What if there is no ^PW? — The size is derived from the extent of the field coordinates, and the result marks it clearly. The real media may be larger; add ^PW and ^LL to your template for an exact measurement.
