Every label ships twice — 203 dpi and 300 dpi — with the geometry recomputed, not scaled. Sending the 203 dpi file to a 300 dpi printer is itself a useful demonstration: it prints at roughly two-thirds size.

These are measurement aids, not certification. The barcode ladder tells you what your scanner reads today on your media; it does not grade print quality to ISO/IEC 15416 — that needs an optical verifier.

How to use the test pack

  1. Download the ZIP and open the folder matching your printer's resolution — 203 dpi for most desktop Zebra models, 300 dpi for high-resolution heads. If you are not sure, print the ruler from both and see which one measures correctly.
  2. Send one file at a time. Raw thermal printing writes bytes to TCP port 9100, so `nc 192.168.1.50 9100 < 203dpi/alignment-grid.zpl` is enough on Linux or macOS; no driver is involved.
  3. Start with the alignment grid. If a corner mark is missing, the label is being clipped; if the centre cross is off-centre, something is shifting the whole layout. Both point at the file before they point at the hardware.
  4. Move to the label that matches your symptom: the ruler for scale problems, the barcode ladder for scanning failures, the rotation set for orientation, the darkness label for print quality, the font ladder for legibility.

When this is the right tool

Use the pack when a printer misbehaves and you need to separate the file from the hardware. Production labels are a poor diagnostic: they mix content, layout, barcodes and fonts, so a bad print does not tell you which layer failed. These labels isolate one variable each. They are also the fastest way to characterise an unfamiliar printer — a used unit, a customer's device, or a model you are evaluating — before you commit a template design to it.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need to install anything to use these? — No. The files are plain ZPL text; sending them needs nothing more than a network connection to the printer's port 9100. You can also preview each one in the browser first, without a printer at all.
  • Why are there two resolutions? — Because a ZPL layout is expressed in dots, and dots have no fixed physical size. The same coordinates print at roughly two-thirds scale on a 300 dpi head compared to a 203 dpi one, so each label ships with its geometry recomputed for both.
  • Can I use these to certify barcode quality? — No. The barcode ladder shows what your scanner reads on your media today, which is what most teams actually need. Formal print-quality grading against ISO/IEC 15416 requires an optical verifier and is a different exercise.
