How to use the calibration assistant

1. Choose how your printer separates labels: a gap between die-cut labels, a black mark on the back of the liner, or continuous stock with neither. If you do not know, print a configuration label — the media tracking value is on it.
2. Choose direct thermal or thermal transfer. This only tells the printer whether a ribbon is expected; it does not change the calibration itself, but a wrong value produces a ribbon error on one type of printer and a blank label on the other.
3. Pick the goal. Calibrating the sensors (~JC) is the everyday case after changing media; the sensor profile (~JG) prints a graph you read when calibration keeps failing; ~JL only re-measures label length; ^JUS on its own just saves whatever the printer currently holds.
4. Enter your real label length in dots so ^ML can be included — the guide makes it a precondition for calibration on non-continuous media. Then send the sequence exactly as shown: the ^XA…^XZ format first, the ~ command on its own, and the save format last.

Who this is for

Anyone who has to calibrate a Zebra printer from software rather than from its buttons: a warehouse changing label stock on a dozen desktop printers, an integrator provisioning printers from a script, a support engineer who needs to send "the calibration commands" to a remote site and wants to be sure of the order. The commands themselves are short, but their interaction is what people get wrong — ^ML has to be set before ~JC or the measurement runs against the old maximum, a ~ command is processed immediately and does not belong inside a format, and nothing survives power-off until ^JUS is sent. Frequently asked questions

• Why is ^ML required before ~JC? — The guide states that for calibration to work properly the maximum label length must be equal to or greater than the actual label length. ~JC measures the label against that maximum; if the maximum is shorter than the label, the measurement is wrong. ^ML does not apply to continuous media, so the assistant leaves it out there.
• Why is ~JC outside the ^XA…^XZ format? — Commands starting with ~ are processed by the printer as soon as they arrive, independently of any format; commands starting with ^ live inside a label format. The guide documents ~JC, ~JG and ~JL as bare commands, so the assistant sends them on their own line and puts the ^ commands in a format before them.
• Do I need ^JUS every time? — Only if you want the result to survive a power cycle. ^JU S saves the current settings and the guide says those saved values are used at power-on; without it the printer reverts to the last saved configuration. The assistant sends ^JUS after the ~ command so that it saves the calibration result, not the state before it.
• My printer has a SmartCal or auto-calibrate button — is that the same thing? — It is the printer's built-in calibration routine triggered from the control panel. The ZPL guide does not describe it — it refers you to the specific printer's user guide — so this page cannot tell you the button sequence for your model. The commands here do the equivalent from software.
• Which printers does this work on? — The commands are part of ZPL II and the guide lists only a few exceptions: the HC100 ignores ~JC, ^ML and ^MT, ^MNA auto-detect is a G-Series feature and ^MNV is KR403-only. Beyond those footnotes the page makes no model claims; Labelixa's printer database records what has actually been verified per model.
