Warehouse, Rack and Location Labels

Check rack, bin and pallet labels for readability and overflow on screen, before you print and mount them.

The problem

The cost of a warehouse label appears at mounting time, not at print time: a rack label is printed, laminated and fixed to the aisle. If the location code overflows, if the barcode module is too narrow for the handheld terminal, or if the aisle code and the bin code are swapped, the mistake is not in one label — it is in every label printed from that same template. It surfaces during a stock count, and fixing it means going back and re-mounting.

What does Labelixa do?

Verify the template once, before mounting

Hundreds of labels come off one template. Preview it at real size and try your longest location code, so overflow shows up on the first label rather than in the aisle.

Module width and scan distance

Handhelds read from a distance, and a narrow module causes read failures on rack labels. Change the `^BY` module width and compare the output side by side — decide before the physical test, not after.

How long codes behave

Location codes grow (A-12-03 → AR-112-03-B) and fields overflow. Preview the longest possible code and find the field limit up front.

One template, several label sizes

Rack, bin and pallet labels have different sizes; the size is part of the request, so you do not have to duplicate the template.

Commonly used symbologies

SYMBOLOGYCode 128

Location and bin codes — the handheld standard

SYMBOLOGYData Matrix

Small bin labels, narrow surfaces

SYMBOLOGYCode 39

Backward compatibility with older handhelds

How to integrate

  1. Paste your rack label template into the preview tool and see it at real size.
  2. Try the location code at its longest — that is where overflow shows up.
  3. Change the `^BY` module width and compare the two outputs; pick the one that suits your scan distance.
  4. Once the template is settled, connect it to the system that generates the labels — the WMS integration path is on the ERP & WMS page.

Frequently asked questions

Which barcode type should I use on a rack label?

Code 128 is the common choice for alphanumeric location codes; if the surface is very narrow, Data Matrix takes less space. Some older handhelds only read Code 39.

How do I change the label size?

The size is part of the request, so you can preview the same ZPL at different sizes instead of keeping separate templates for rack, bin and pallet.

Can we render the labels our WMS produces automatically?

Yes, through the REST API. The integration flow and the on-premise option are described on the ERP & WMS solution page.
