A new thermal transfer printer, a roll of labels and a ribbon bought on the reseller's advice — and the first prints come out washed out, smear under a thumb, or show holes with no pattern. "Incompatible labels or a bad ribbon choice?" is the natural question, and the printer manufacturer's own documentation answers it more precisely than a forum guess.
Zebra's supplies FAQ divides thermal transfer ribbons into three families and states what each is designed for:

Two mismatches follow directly from that table. A wax ribbon on a glossy synthetic label has nothing to bond to and the image rubs off; a resin ribbon run at the speed a wax ribbon tolerates does not get the dwell time it needs and the transfer comes out incomplete. The same FAQ recommends testing the ribbon and material combination before committing to production — a smudging or incomplete transfer is exactly what that test is meant to catch.
The ZD421/ZD621 user guide has a troubleshooting entry for general print quality. For thermal transfer printing it names one symptom word for word: print that is fuzzy, has smudge marks, or has voids or holes in the print with no particular pattern. Its stated cause is that the ribbon type — wax, wax-resin or resin — may not match the material (paper, media coating, synthetics), and its stated fix is to match them and to set the print speed no higher than the ribbon's maximum.
The same entry lists the other causes it wants ruled out, and they are worth taking in order because several look identical on paper:
A blank label is a different entry in the same guide, and its first two checks are about the media, not the file: the label may be loaded with the printable surface facing the wrong way — it must face up, toward the printhead — or the stock may be thermal transfer media in a printer that is running direct thermal, with no ribbon to transfer from. If the preview of your file is fine and the label stays white, start there; the blank label guide covers the cases that are in the file.
Before buying a pallet of either, test the pair the way the FAQ suggests — a few labels through the printer, checked for smudging and complete transfer.
Ribbon chemistry cannot be seen in a browser, but a preview settles the other half of the question: if the rendered label is crisp and complete while the paper is faint or patchy, the file is not the problem and the list above is. Speckling in areas that should be white has its own guide — dots in white areas — because darkness, dirt and wear at the printhead show up there before they show up as fading.
